Subject: yosemite vip weekend april 2009!

well we had a fabulous start to the climbing year in our first volunteer in the park project at yosemite last weekend. our task was to move the tent platforms we built at the end of last season over to camp 4. we started setting up the structures, did some painting of the platforms as well as painted some of the existing tent cabin doors and porches. we got quite a bit done but it was too much for only 6 hours. i'm sure we'll probably have to finish it out next month!

the valley was absolutely beautiful and the weather was amazing. i've never seen yosemite falls with so much water! and there was still some snow in the merced. best part of the work day for me was spotting a bear! someone had been yelling like a banshee at camp 4. i thought someone had fallen off rock and was trying to get help. then i see him running. so i go stalking... the guy doubles back to continue bouldering and i spot the bear. i slowly approached and came upon it while it was playing with a lime green nalgene bottle. it spied me just as i got one great photo! (though it needs some light adjustment. however, the bear just wouldn't sit for another photo!)(honestly, don't they train them!) anyway, here are some shots of yosemite, camp 4, the bear and more are here:

after working, we headed out to the left of yosemite falls to climb jam crack (5.7) and lemon (5.9). they were fairly easy climbs (considering) and my new shoes somehow felt pretty solid in the cracks. i don't practice crack climbing in the gym (though i probably should). i just sort of do it and let the pain drive me forward! of course, i get lots of advice from the group on what the heck i'm supposed to do! anyway, it felt a lot better this year. i could not help taking pictures of some up and coming climbers. they were totally cute and inspirational ~ don't you think? here are some photos from those climbs:

after pizza, beer, wine, chocolate and a good night's sleep, we headed out to pat & jack's pinnacles. we climbed 4 routes - sherrie's crack (5.10c), nurdle (5.8), knuckleheads (5.10b) and another 5.10b whose name we are trying to figure out. the 5.8 climb was a bit harder than the day before and was really fun. then, i was coaxed to try the 5.10c (gulp!). got very up close and personal with the granite! the last two 5.10bs were a struggle too. not much to hold onto and i ended up cutting two of my fingers! that, and re-brusing my knees... (i guess you can call it a permanent feature by now! :-)) here are the photos from those climbs:

can't wait for the next adventure!

enjoy ~

Jack.. How do I post images from last weekend?

I have lots of beautiful shots from our trip last weekend. Can I post, or should I send them to you? I can't even figure out how to post a comment on the website except by responding to another. Anyway, we had a wonderful time.. I think you blew the Italian's mind! Great to meet you.

Unfortunately, it's not that

Unfortunately, it's not that easy.... If you email them to me (jack@pgvip.net), I can upload them.

I would love to see the bear pictures.
